You can water the planters while on the wall through a grid of watering holes. Or you can take the planters off and water like you would a normal plant pot.
The planters can take up to 150-200ml per planter once every 7-10 days in summer and once every 10-13 days in winter. The whole system is designed to teach people not to over water their plants, as this tends to be the primary reason for plant demise.
Loam soil, which has a mixture of clay, sand and silt in equal parts. Clay and silt are water retentive and as a result help for the soil particles to stick together. This combined with plant roots that inhibit soil erosion, prevents the soil from dropping out.
That is not to say that it's absolutely fool proof. Occasionally you will get small soil spattering on the floor, but nothing that can't be hoovered up. You can see 2 month worth of mess and that's after moving the planters in and out on the daily basis for our own work, developments and maintenance.
I recommend using sphagnum moss, it has the added value of moisture retention.
Yes, you can lift them in and out from the frame with ease. Great when it's time for re-potting, routine maintenance or a simple spring airing.
A single standard frame holds 3 planters. You will also find a mini frame, which holds one single pot. Both frames are compatible with each other.
Yes, absolutely. The whole system is modular and designed to grow at your pace and/or specifically for a space you have in mind. The planters fit both the mini frame and the standard frame. Both frames are compatible with each other.
Yes, both, the frames and the planters can be used outdoors.
Terracotta by its nature is porous, the pores become small traps for water to freeze and expand in causing cracks. You cannot entirely loose this porosity, but it can be improved with longer firing, which allows the material to vitrify.
Horticus planters are fired for 14hours at a temperature over 1000°C. This with the fact that planters are on frames instead of sitting on the ground make the pots less susceptible to frost. The latent heat from any wall that the frames are attached to provide additional protection for the planters.
